Garey Fuqua

Garey has 25+ years of financial industry experience.  He joined Umergence in 2021 as managing director, co-founder and co-head with Michael Sullivan, of a platform focused on pK-12 education, seniors housing and elderly care, rural and inner city healthcare, affordable multi-family housing, nonprofit and social/civic/human services, and smart cities sectors.  

 

Garey structures and arranges, private, customized capital markets solutions, particularly for those focused on affordable, impact, and mission service delivery models.  He assists socially beneficial enterprises, particularly in underserved US markets, with special financing needs and situations from distressed to market acquisitions to ground-up construction to performance improvement and rescue recapitalizations to value-add bridge and growth capital to refinancings (including via US agencies, commercial banks, REITs, CDFIs, and bond mutual funds) to op-ex/liquidity to general corporate advisory and consulting.  

 

Garey has extensive experience helping charter schools, assisted living facilities (ALFs) and the entire post-acute continuum with curated, bespoke solutions including for those in secondary and tertiary service areas, with limited access to capital, startups, stressed or distressed financial or operating profiles, and other complexity that other lenders and investors likely do not understand or care about relating to children and senior citizens or diversity, equity, and justice.

 

Prior to Umergence, Garey most recently focused on developing and implementing tax advantaged and tax efficient financing strategies, deal sourcing and structuring, execution of private debt strategies, and restructuring and recapitalizations of distressed or underperforming assets.  During his career Garey has worked on more than $35-billion of securities and loans in public finance and project finance non-tax-backed transactions.  He has also managed a collateralized debt obligation, regulated investment company, general partner / limited partner fund, and separately managed account, among other investment vehicles and structures.

 

Garey received a BS in Corporate Finance from the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University and an MPA in State and Local Government Financial Analysis and Management from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.  

 

To become registered and licensed, Garey passed qualifying exams administered by FINRA including but not limited to:

o          Series 24, General Securities Principal

o          Series 53, Municipal Securities Principal

o          Series 63, Uniform Securities Agent State Law
